Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has given firm assurances that the newly launched Big Push road project in Afienya in the Greater Accra region will be completed in under 24 months.
He called the project a "bold intervention" that transcends politics.
Mr. Agbodza, who spoke at the sod-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, September 16, acknowledged the Ministry's enormous debt load, which is believed to be GH¢40 billion owing to contractors. However, he emphasised that the government was determined to provide results this time.
"If you visit the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Mr. President, you will see that we owe contractors approximately 40 billion Ghana cedis," he disclosed.
"However, it was challenging to see what the money was used for when we travelled throughout the 16 regions of the country."
President John Mahama's leadership in enacting what he described as the biggest single intervention in Ghana's road sector was praised by Mr. Agbodza.
"In spite of everything, Mr. President, you made a daring promise to implement an intervention that will be remembered as the president who administered the most intervention on our roads at one time," the Minister said.
"The Big Push is a daring government intervention, not a campaign pledge."
Mr. Agbodza took action to allay worries about possible delays by highlighting the contractor's competence in managing the Afienya segment.
"We mean business when we claim we can complete this project in four months. Don't worry, residents of Ga-Dangbe and Greater Accra," he reassured them.
"I think the contractor on this stretch can finish this project in less than 24 months."
The Minister also assured Ghanaians that the Big Push will bring about noticeable advancements, with the government keeping a careful eye on delivery schedules.
"We will execute Big Push, and the outcomes will be visible to all," he declared.
The government has allocated GH¢13.85 billion (US$892.9 million) for the Big Push programme.
