Ghana fines DSTV GHS 10k daily for not submitting its pricing data
Ghana fines DSTV GHC 10,000 daily for failing to submit pricing data. Minister Sam George demands transparency on bouquet costs & taxes to justify subscription fees. License suspension looms if no resolution by Sept 6, 2025.
DSTV Compliance Notice
4th September 11.24pm
Effective August 15, 2025, MultiChoice Ghana (DSTV) will be subject to a statutory fine of GHC10,000 per day imposed by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations for its failure to provide essential price information as required by the Electronic Communications Act (ECA).
During a meeting with the DSTV team at the Ministry, Sector Minister Samuel Nartey George (MP) informed the firm of the decision.
He stated that in order to facilitate a meaningful conversation on lowering subscription fees for Ghanaian users, the data was required. This included a breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components, and comparisons with at least six other African countries.
The Minister claims that although DSTV was given until Monday, August 11, 2025, to submit the material, they were unable to do so.
"I was notified by the regulator that you asked for an extension through Monday. A GHC 10,000 fine is imposed on operators who violate the Electronic Communications Act (ECA) by failing to submit requested information on a daily basis. Since the difference of a few days was not crucial at that point, I consented to wait until Monday rather than begin charging right away," he added.
The Ministry had previously threatened to suspend DSTV's operating license if no price decrease was reached by September 6, 2025.
This daily fine was imposed after the corporation refused to cut subscription fees in spite of suggestions from the Ministry.
According to Sam George, despite the deadline extension, the corporation has yet to furnish the information, which has prevented any significant interaction.
"The regulator has confirmed that the requested information has still not been supplied as of today's meeting. Because the evidence we require to support or refute your pricing has not been provided, it is hard to have a meaningful conversation. Therefore, starting today, the Ministry will enforce the GHC 10,000 day statutory fee until the complete information is obtained," the Minister said.
Sam George stated that "the law is clear, and we will enforce it," emphasizing that the information request is distinct from continuing stakeholder interaction. We can freeze accounts if needed to safeguard the interests of customers.
The Minister added that an unbiased examination will be carried out after the data is presented.
"If the evidence shows that taxes are the only reason for high prices, I will advocate for a tax review," he said, offering DSTV a glimmer of hope. If not, we anticipate that DSTV will follow our order to lower the cost of subscriptions.
